چکیده
Using pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance techniques, we directly probe electron-spin resonance transitions in the excited-state of single Nitrogen-Vacancy color centers in diamond. Unambiguous assignment of excited state fine structure is made, based on changes of NV defect photoluminescence lifetime. This study provides significant insight into the structure of the emitting E excited state, which is invaluable for the development diamond-based quantum information processing.

متن کاملLow temperature studies of the excited-state structure of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond.
We report a study of the 3E excited-state structure of single negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond, combining resonant excitation at cryogenic temperatures and optically detected magnetic resonance. A theoretical model is developed and shows excellent agreement with experimental observations. In addition, we show that the two orbital branches associated with the 3E excite...
متن کاملSpectroscopy of Single N-V Centers in Diamond
Over the past few years, the detection of single N-V centers in diamond has attracted much interest, since it is expected to lead to innovative applications in various domains of quantum information. The N-V center in diamond is a defect consisting of a substitutional nitrogen atom adjacent to a carbon-atom vacancy. The optical transition between the A ground state and the E excited state has a...
متن کاملOptically detected cross-relaxation spectroscopy of electron spins in diamond.
The application of magnetic resonance spectroscopy at progressively smaller length scales may eventually permit 'chemical imaging' of spins at the surfaces of materials and biological complexes. In particular, the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV(-)) centre in diamond has been exploited as an optical transducer for nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance. However, the spectra of detected sp...
متن کاملLow-field optically detected magnetic resonance of a coupled triplet-doublet defect pair in diamond.
Microwave-induced changes in the optical emission of the NV center in diamond have previously been attributed to magnetic resonance of the defect in its A ground state [E. van Oort et al. , J. Phys. C 21, 4385 (1988)]. In this paper, the focus is on the origin of the hyperfine splittings that are observed in the optically detected magnetic-resonance (ODMR) spectra at zero and low magnetic field...
